一、词性不同：
1、third 可表示形容词，表示 第三 (个) 的。如：I sleep on the third floor 我睡在三楼。
2、thirdly 是副词，表示第三，三则。如：First of all，there are not many of them，and secondly，they have little money and，thirdly，they have few big businesses。首先，他们人数不多；第二，他们钱很少；第三，他们没有几家大企业。
二、与 the 定冠词的搭配不同：
third前可加 the 定冠词，表示指独一无二的第三点。如：It was the third time one of his cars had gone up in flames 这是他的车第三次起火。
三、作为名词用法不同：
1、third可以表示三分之一，如：A third of the cost went into technology and services 有三分之一的支出投入了技术和服务。
2、third可以表示三等学位：A third is the lowest honours degree that can be obtained from a British university。英国大学颁发的最低级荣誉学位。
