A、B、C到Z，一共有26个字母，在26个字母中，元音字母有5个，辅音字母有21个，5个元音字母（a，e，i，o，u）在单词中出现的频率非常高，几乎每一个单词都离不开它们。即使个别单词没有这5个元音字母，也需要由半元音字母y来代替。比如单词sky中的y就是发/ai/的音，和元音字母i的发音一样。
五个元音字母发音规则：
a 在重读闭音节 [æ]： catch, activity, action, angry, plan, character, exam, talent
a 在不重读闭音节 [ə]： appear, character, accept, advice, achieve, abroad, agree
a 在开音节 发字母音 [ei]: brave, safe, strange
e 在重读闭音节 [e]: together, stress, pressure, invent
e在不重读闭音节多为 [i]: below, relation, report, decision, expect
[ə]: talent, toilet, necessary
e 在开音节 发字母音 [i:]: she, we, Chinese, Japanese
i 在闭音节[i]: simple, discuss, satisfaction, situation, silk, interest, spirit, instead
i 在开音节[ai]: provide，excite, hide, invite, surprise, mile, advise
O 在重读闭音节 [ɔ]: object, offer, holiday, possible, computer, college,promise
O 在不重读闭音节 [ə]:consider, personal, introduce, opinion, opposite, compete
O 在开音节发字母音 [əu]: phone, photo, hole
O 特殊发音 [Λ]：cover, wonder, wonderful, onion
U 在开音节发 [ju:] : university, excuse, computer
U 在闭音节发 [Λ]：understand, unless, until, upset, discuss, hundred
